Maybe you’ve heard the term rack & pinion steering and always wondered what that means?
This photo shows two steering racks sitting side by side. The dark colored one was leaking power steering fluid and was being replaced because of it. It came out of a 2000 Dodge Dakota with only about 44,000 miles.

There are a lot less moving parts compared to the older steering systems. Less weight equals better fuel economy.
